ART CENTRE HISTORY
ประวัติความเป็นมา

ABOUT US
The Art Centre Silpakorn University is an organisation supporting the promotion of contemporary art through national and international art exhibition and activities in various venues, not only at its own spaces.

The Art Centre runs two different art spaces within Silpakorn University Bangkok and Nakornpathom campus. The main gallery occupies a heritage building of Silpakorn University, Bangkok, and a more recent contemporary art gallery is located at Sanamchandra campus of Silpakorn University in Nakornpathom. The gallery in Bangkok was previously the old palace built in early Rattanakosin period (around 1800s). It focuses on national and international art exhibition, activities and event all year long, while the gallery in Nakornpathom campus is built in contemporary architectural style, presenting massive archive of art collections from National art exhibitions until present.

The Art Centre aims at promoting and disseminating knowledge and information about contemporary art. International collaboration and exchange project concerning art and culture is regularly held.

The Art Centre aims at promoting and disseminating knowledge and information about contemporary art. Occupying a central location at this campus, it is Thailand's most prestigious art gallery. History

Silpakorn University's Art Centre was established in  1979. Its premises consist of two former royal buildings : the Grand Hall and the Pannarai Wing that used to be part of Wang Thapra palace (the West Palace). It was built in the reign of King Rama I since the settlement of Bangkok capital. King Rama II then granted the West Palace to Prince Jetsadabodin (later became King Rama III) and his descendants. In the reign of King Rama V, this palace building was granted to Prince Narisara Nuvativongse to be his residence. In 1943, Silpakorn University was established and not long after that, the West Palace was also closed down. Until 1960, Silpakorn University asked the royal permission from Prince Narisara Nuvativongse's descendant to use the palace building and its compound as university. In 1979, Silpakorn University established the Art Centre within these royal buildings: the Main Hall, the Grand Hall and the Pannarai Wing.
